Transformer एक ऐसी passive इलेक्ट्रिकल डिवाइस है जो electrical energy (विधुत ऊर्जा) को दो या दो से ज्यादा circuits में ट्रान्सफर करता है.
सामान्यतया “ट्रांसफार्मर एक सरल static या स्थिर electro-magnetic इलेक्ट्रिकल डिवाइस है जो फैराडे के law of induction के सिद्धांत पर कार्य करता है.”

ट्रांसफार्मर का ज्यादातर उपयोग circuits में voltage levels को step up (increase) या step down (decrease) करने के लिए किया जाता है.

अर्थात् इसका मुख्य प्रयोग वोल्टेज को घटाने और बढाने के लिए किया जाता है.
