In fall 1982, NBC premiered an ensemble medical drama that mixed a stark, clinical environment with dark humor.
(The New York Times called it a "doctor-and-nurse version of 'Hill Street Blues.'") "St. Elsewhere" was set in a fictitious Boston hospital called St. Eligius. The locals dub the facility "St. Elsewhere" because the rundown hospital has seen better days and is overshadowed by the more modern Boston General across town.

The show lasted six seasons and earned 62 Primetime Emmy award nominations, winning 13 of them.
